Cupping Therapy

Cupping Therapy

Cupping is an ancient technique that has found its place in the modern world of healing, and it is used extensively in traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

The cupping therapy vacuum stimulates micro blood circulation to the local area, improving the flow of Qi and blood in the body, increasing local blood supply to the muscles and skin. This brings nourishment and allows for toxins to be carried away through the veins.

There are two main cupping techniques: stationary and moving. Stationary cupping is used in TCM to clear stagnation of blood, to facilitate the release of pathogenic factors, and to dispel internal heat. Usually, stationary cups are placed on the skin and left for a period of five to 15 minutes in one location. It is the method most commonly used in Chinese medicine, and it is used in help back pain, shoulder joint and knee joints pain. Moving (or “massage cupping”) is the more commonly used form of cupping among massage therapists and other health care practitioners. By creating suction and negative pressure, massage cupping is used to help drain excess fluids and toxins; stimulate the peripheral nervous system, bring blood flow to stagnant muscles and skin; help relaxes tight muscle tissue and releases pain; loosen adhesions, lift connective tissue and stubborn knots in soft tissue. Massage cupping is often used on the broad areas of the neck, shoulder and back, which is a wonderful addition to any massage.

Cupping is a safe, non-invasive and an inexpensive technique. Traditional cups are made of bamboo, strong pyrex glass or plastic. In clinics, most practitioners choose the glass cup in order to use the fire cupping method to create suction to in helping many conditions such as cold and flus, musculoskeletal problems, and neurological disorders.

After the cupping procedure, the skin in the areas cupped may turn red, swell, and/or also turn black under the particular conditions such as poor blood circulation of body system and joint pain caused from cold. The marks will subside and a normal skin tone will be restored after a few hours or days.
